2019 Summer Art Academy Classes

The Knoxville Museum of Art’s Summer Art Academy offers quality educational opportunities that will ignite your child’s imagination through drawing, painting, sculpture, and more!

Each week offers a new and exciting age-appropriate art class that will nourish and challenge your child. The KMA’s certified art educators provide instruction in small groups with personalized instruction. The end of each week is celebrated with an exhibition and presentations by the students.

Classes are held at the Knoxville Museum of Art. Morning classes are offered each week for children ages 3-12. Afternoon classes are offered for ages 13 and up. One-week classes start Monday, June 3, and continue each week through Friday, July 26. Tuition for the half-day class is $100.00 for KMA members and $115.00 for non-members (unless specified otherwise), and includes workshop supplies, instruction, and gallery activities.

ART ESSENTIALS

 Alphabet Adventures
Ages 3-4

Our youngest gain a basic understanding of color principles while practicing letters and writing.

Colliding Colors
Ages 5-6
9am-12pm
$100 Members/$115 Non-members
Students explore combinations of primary and secondary colors with a wide variety of materials.

Outside the Lines
Ages 7-9
9am-12pm

This class covers the basics of art such as color, line, value and more while encouraging students to express themselves creatively.

Inspiration & Creation
Ages 10-12
9am-12pm

Students build on an understanding of the elements of art, and the basics of painting, drawing, sculpting, printmaking, and more.

 

June 10-14
FOCUS ON PRINTMAKING
(Each student is asked to bring a white cotton shirt for printing. Per-order from KMA for $5.00.)

Stamps & More
Ages 3-4

In this beginning printmaking class, students experiment with several different ways to create prints.

Prolific Printers
Ages 5-6
9am-12pm

Students learn the basics of printmaking and use their own ideas to create images that can be reproduced over and over again.

What a Relief!
Ages 7-9

Students learn to design and print their own editions using screens, linocut, woodcut and more in this messy and fun class.

Magnificent Monoprints
Ages 10-12

This class is a perfect introduction to printmaking for students looking to further their artistic abilities, creating a large portfolio of original prints and learning the basics of many methods for making a monoprint.

ART LAB

Mess Makers
Ages 3-4

Little artists try out using non-traditional art materials such as table salt, plastic wrap, cardboard, Styrofoam, and more to create original works of art.

Mad-Science Art
Ages 5-6
9am-12pm

This hands-on class allows students to become mad scientists incorporating science with art by using unusual art materials and methods.

Slimes & Potions
Ages 7-9
9am-12pm

Can’t get enough of slime? Neither can we! Students in this class make slime and use it to create other mixed media works of art. Perfect for kids who love hands-on projects, color theory, and creating abstract art!

Abstract Expressionism
Ages 10-12

Students experiment with surprising ways to apply paint such as using toothbrushes, sticks, spoons, rubber spatulas and more, and learn about the abstract expressionism movement and artists from history such as Jackson Pollock and Beauford Delaney.

Diary of a Preschooler
Ages 3-4

Little artists create their own sketchbook journals using simple bookmaking techniques that are great for developing fine motor skills.

Unparalleled Portraits
Ages 5-6

Students take a look at portraiture throughout history, and create their own self-portraits using acrylic paint, oil pastel, watercolor, chalk pastel and more!

Extraordinary Selfies
Ages 7-9
9am-12pm

The self-portrait has been a part of art since the very beginning. In this class students investigate the history of the art form and think creatively about how to reinvent their own selfie, using a combination of collage with magazines, acrylic paint, air dry clay, watercolor, and drawing materials.

Art Journaling
Ages 10-12

This class explores self-expression through bookmaking, drawing, journaling and more! Students create a handmade sketchbook or journal and fill the pages with drawings, poems, paintings, collages, and more.

EXPLORE THE MUSEUM

Art Explorers
Ages 3-4

This week students get to explore the galleries at KMA and create art inspired by what they find!

 Painting Pioneers
Ages 5-6
9am-12pm
$100 Members/$115 Non-members
Students spend time looking at some of the incredible paintings in the KMA galleries, and then create artwork inspired by what they observe.

 Gallery Scouts
Ages 7-9
9am-12pm
$100 Members/$115 Non-members
This class spends each day focused on a different part of KMA’s collection including the Thorne Rooms and Richard Jolly’s Cycle of Life. After studying the artwork that surrounds them, students respond by creating their own masterpieces.

 Art-chitects
Ages 10-12

Everything is a work of art at KMA, including the building itself. Students in this class look at the museum and other original buildings in Knoxville, and then make art inspired by the “art-chitecture” all around them!

 

July 15-19
FOCUS ON PROCESS ART

Abstract Adventures
Ages 3-4

This class is all about trying new things! The instructor guides the student in allowing the process to inform the final product, so there’s no wrong way to create!

Action Painting
Ages 5-6
9am-12pm
$100 Members/$115 Non-members
Look out Jackson Pollock! This class allows students the freedom to drip and drop paint on their canvases any way they want, focusing on enjoying the process without worrying about the outcome.

Art Avalanche
Ages 7-9
9am-12pm

Each day builds on the last in this unique process-based class. Students walk away with a large piece of art which is added to day-by-day.

Trailblazers
Ages 10-12

In “process art” the way the art was made is not hidden but remains an important part of the completed work, so very piece is almost like a map of the journey of the artist. In this class our young artists blaze trails, and their artwork tell the story!

CREATURE CREATIONS

Garden Guardians
Ages 3-4

Students learn about the helpful creatures living in our gardens, and make art inspired by our creepy crawly friends!

Jurassic Art
Ages 5-6

There’s nothing more fun than drawing a dino. Students create awesome artwork while learning all about your favorite prehistoric pals!

Fine Feathered Friends
Ages 7-9
9am-12pm

Birds have been featured in artwork for centuries, and for good reason! Students in this class take a look at artists like Charlie Harper whose work prominently features birds, and find out just what makes our feathered friends so inspiring.

Myths & Legends
Ages 10-12

Dragons, unicorns and more! Mythical creatures have long inspired artists in many different cultures. Students create artwork based on mythical creatures from all over the world.

 

AFTERNOON CLASSES

 June 10-21 (Two-Week Class)
Stop-Motion Animation Workshop
Ages 7-12
1-4pm
$200 Members/$225 Non-members
If your child loves watching animated films and seeing their ideas come to life they will love this workshop. In this workshop kids will work together in small groups to create a short animated film of their choosing and design. Kids will learn how to move and manipulate shapes/designs while telling a story. The whole process is very hands-on and teaches essential skills in storytelling, layout, design, and movement.
The films will premiere Sunday, July 14 in the Regal Auditorium. The films will be shown on a loop during Second Sunday.

 

July 8-19 (Two-Week Class)
Clay Adventures: Ceramic Hand building
Ages 7-12
1-4pm
$200 Members/$225 Non-members
Revel in the wet, wonderful world of clay! Students will practice and stretch skills while learning about the techniques of hand building, surface decorating and glazing. They will explore form, texture, and color while designing a wind chime and constructing their own ceramic pieces. All works will be either painted, or glazed and kiln fired.

 

TEEN CLASSES

Teen Ceramics
Ages 13 and up

This class combines basic throwing and hand building techniques for beginners with more advanced techniques for continuing students. Demonstrations and discussions will complement the hands-on experiences, and students will explore a variety of methods for finishing their work.

 

July 22-26
Teen Painting
Ages 13 and up
1-4pm
$100 Members/$115 Non-members
In this class students explore the various ways of applying paint to a canvas. Each class will focus on one specific technique, such as: stippling, blending, dry brush, scumbling and graffito. Lessons are based on direct observation and students complete a new painting in every class.
