This wine received Wine Spectator's #1 Ranking on the 2009 TOP 100 list. Harvey Steinman [WS] 95 points: “Ripe in flavor, with a vivid array of black currant, blackberry, violet, black tea and black pepper aromas and flavors that zoom through to a long, expressive finish. Shows subtlety in the layers of complex flavor against a refined structure. Tannins are present but nicely contained.” Less than 150 bottles came to the entire East Tennessee market for this specific wine. Now is your chance to get it!

Thirty-one years after it was first produced by the Bogle family in 1978, Petite Sirah is today considered Bogle’s “heritage” varietal. Winemaker notes: “Ripe summer blackberries and plums overwhelm both the nose and palate of this wine. Its trademark inky, jammy qualities are a barrage of black fruit and spice, adding layer upon layer of complexity. Notes of supple leather and toasty oak envelop the flavors through the finish, giving way to wisps of caramel and vanilla.” James Laube [WS] has consistently given Bogle Petite Sirah vintages a rating of 88 points. Since this is non-vintage, it contains some of all those recent vintages. Nice Petite Sirah in a large bottle format that is ready to drink.

James Laube [WS] rated this superb Merlot with 89 points: “Very intense and, with a mix of herbs, chocolate, cherry and currant, firmly supported by dry, earthy tannins. Needs short-term cellaring or decanting, or both. Tightly wound, as Howell Mountain Merlots tend to be.” Beringer Howell Mountain Bancroft Ranch Merlots are really, really good. This is a great bottle.

Information on Barnett Vineyards on Spring Mountain is contained in another auction lot. James Laube [WS] awarded 88 points: “Tight, with firm tannins and a bit of hollowness at midpalate. The currant, earth, pencil lead and earthy tannins are intense. Best through 2012.” Another good California Cabernet Sauvignon in search of a good home.

Harvey Steinman, writing for Wine Spectator: “Big and powerful, brimming with tarry, spicy black cherry, dark plum, blackberry and chocolate flavors. Rich and gooey like a warm flourless chocolate cake, yet it finds a plush balance that keeps it from veering off into heaviness. This has grace, harmony and refinement, without losing an ounce of power.” He awarded 97 points. This is Wine Spectator’s 27th ranked Wine of the Year in 2004. It will last until around 2025, but we are sure you won’t wait that long.

The double action lever system used by Pulltap's corkscrew is claimed to be the best way to extract even the toughest corks. The first trace of Chateau Giscours appears in the history books in 1330, when it was described as a fortified dungeon! Just over two centuries later, in 1552, documents concerning sale of the estate show it was then recognized as a vineyard. The Chateau has a significant number of old vines; 25% are over 40 years old. A left bank Bordeaux wine, the grapes are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (53%). It contains Merlot (42%) with the remainder Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Parker rates the 2003 Chateau Giscours 90 points: “The deep ruby/purple-hued 2003 offers complex, evolved aromatics of wood smoke, chocolate, charcoal, black cherry jam, and cassis. Lush, medium to full-bodied, and broad, with low acidity, copious glycerin, and a layered, persistent finish which lasts for 40+ second.” The 2003 vintage has been recognized as one of the top vintages of the decade. The wine will hold its peak for the next decade. This is great Bordeaux that is ready for you!

Pride Mountain Vineyards has long been a friend of the Museum and L’Amour du Vin. Pride makes superb Cabernets and Merlots. Robert Parker rated this vintage 92: “The deep ruby/purple-colored 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (58% from Napa and 42% from Sonoma) possesses a full-bodied mouthfeel as well as loads of cassis fruit, and smoky, subtle oak in the background. Round, plump, and hedonistic, it should drink well for a decade.” This is a great bottle of California Cabernet at its best.

The 2007 The Lucky Tornado (88% Merlot + 12% Cabernet Sauvignon) is being released this month. Because of their ties to the Knoxville area, Matthew and Lindsay wanted to donate this magnum to L’Amour du Vin. It is not yet rated, but the Regans tell us: “This wine offers a whirlwind of tempting aromas like warm spiced blackberry cobbler, brandied cherries, Grandpa’s cigar box and fresh bay laurel. The Lucky Tornado is dominated by bright flavors of dark berries with hints of mint and mocha. With intoxicating aromas, loads of luscious dark fruits and soft, smooth tannins this is a most approachable and enjoyable red wine!” We tasted some of their wine in November and it is very, very good!

Robert Parker rated 90 points, “The 2004 Keenan Merlot (which includes 3% Cabernet Franc) is a dense, rich, concentrated effort boasting a dark ruby/purple color along with plenty of black cherry and currant fruit intermixed with espresso roast and earth notes. Its moderate tannin is sweet and well-integrated.” There are no ratings on the 2003 Viña Alicia Malbec by either Parker or Wine Spectator. However, Parker rated the last two vintages of this wine with 92 and 93 points. Based on those reviews, we know that the wine is sourced from ungrafted vines that have very high age and consequently low yields. The wine typically spends 12 – 16 months in new French oak. They are inky purple wines that are full-bodies, concentrated, and long-finishing [45 – 60 seconds or more]. This lot has two great red wines to satisfy you.

Dr. Michael Milano has been making Vino Nostro, "our wine," in his home for thirty-five years. The Chardonnay is new but ready to drink. It was fermented au savage with the wild yeasts on the skins. The Zinfandel was a gold medal winner. It has a nice, peppery, varietal flush. The Sangiovese was a bronze medal winner. It is light, bright, and quite Tuscan. The Cabernet is very fruit forward with subdued tannins and crafted in the California, merlotish style. The Syrah is rich and jammy but with backbone. Vino Nostro goes very nicely with opera, and it is quite compatible with most other pleasures.

Here is another offering from Dr Michael Milano, the New Jersey, winemaking psychiatrist. In its thirty-fifth year, Vino Nostro, "our wine," provides a young, but ready to drink, 2009 Chardonnay that was fermented au savage with the wild yeasts on the skins. The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is very fruit forward with subdued tannins and fashioned in the California merlotish style. The 2007 Oaked Syrah is rich and jammy but with evident backbone. Nary a neurosis or psychosis in the batch, and all are ready for consumption on or off the couch.

Robert Parker rated this vintage 88 – 90 points. “This St. Emilion is a dense, thick, structured wine. Made in an opulent style, with a dense ruby/purple color, aromas and flavors of blackberries, cassis, and minerals, medium to full body, and significant tannin, it requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for 12-15. It is a sleeper of the vintage.” It is an ill-kept secret that sleeper of the vintage is code for “not well-known but good.” Three good bottles of right bank Bordeaux that are at their peak.

Saracina is a 600-acre bio-diverse property encompassing three ranches located in Hopland, California. Parker rated 86 points, “The 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is a straightforward style of Sauvignon, priced fairly, with grapefruit, white currant, and a touch of citrus oil in a medium-bodied, fresh style.” James Laube [WS] rated 88 points, the 2007 Pinot Noir has “Smooth and supple, offering a harmonious mix of ripe cherry, wild berry and plum that's elegant, full-bodied, fleshy and complex, ending with a long, lingering finish.” Two interesting wines to try.

The name Pavie, which would appear to be derived from pavies, describing the deeply colored peaches that once grew on the site, first appears in Bordeaux texts during the middle of the 19th century. On the whole the terroir is favorable, with most vines situated on clay and limestone soils. The vines average over 40 years old. As a right bank Bordeaux wine, it is naturally dominated by Merlot [60%], followed by Cabernet Franc [30%] and Cabernet Sauvignon [10%]. Robert Parker rated the 1998 Château Pavie a hefty 95 points: “A 50-year wine, this opaque purple-colored offering exhibits a strong, precise nose of black fruits, liquid minerals, smoke, and graphite. Extremely full-bodied, yet brilliantly delineated, powerful, and awesomely concentrated, it boasts a fabulous mid-palate as well as a finish that lasts for nearly a minute.” This is likely the best Château Pavie ever produced until this vintage! This wonderful terroir also produces grapes for Paul Hobbs, Ramey Wine Cellars, Staglin, and Kistler – to name but a few. Garnering 92 points from Robert Parker: “Gorgeous aromas of crushed rocks/wet stones, white peach, pineapple, and honeyed citrus soar from the glass of the 2006 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard. Medium to full-bodied, fresh, and lively, this is a superb effort to drink over the next 2-3 years.” Parker indicates that the wine will be at peak through 2011. Great Chardonnay from a great terroir.

The 2005 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley was rated 92 points by Wine & Spirits magazine: "A classic Alexander Valley cabernet, this is dark and cedary, and as smooth as velvet. The tannins last, built on black cherry-skin flavor and earthy, root-vegetable notes. With time, that black cherry flavor should become more prominent, balancing the wines earthy complexities. Drink this over the next several years with anything meaty, from duck and game birds to steak." Silver Oak has made great California Cabernets for years. It’s time to fire up the grill!

Drink now through 2016.” This is wonderful wine from a very consistent top producer – in a magnum.

“The 2005 Shiraz “Ares” is a glass-coating opaque purple. The nose delivers tar, scorched earth, saddle leather, blueberry, and a hint of chocolate. Opulent, layered, and intensely flavored, it has excellent integration of oak, tannin, and acidity and enough hidden structure to evolve for up to a decade. Drink this tasty Shiraz through 2025.” Shiraz [aka Syrah most everywhere else] makes powerful huge red wine – just the kind we love. Although kangaroo meat is in short supply in Knoxville, we are sure this would be marvelous with a grilled steak, or any other grilled red meat for that matter.

RP 94 points: “Composed of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new French oak for 22 - 24 months, it is a sensational effort. The opaque plum/purple color is followed by a superb nose of smoked herbs, melted licorice, and black currant jam. Full-bodied, with a silky texture, and an opulent personality, this sexy, full-throttle Cabernet Sauvignon will be delicious young, yet last for 18-20 years.” A marvelous Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet at plateau until the end of this decade.

James Suckling [WS] rates this Super Tuscan 92 points: “Bright aromas of crushed berry and raspberry, with a hint of mineral. Full-bodied and very round, with lovely velvety tannins and a long finish. Big and boisterous. Almost rustic, but hell, it's a beauty. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc.” Mighty nice Super Tuscan wine that is now a peak plateau.

The history of Lynch-Bages is detailed elsewhere in the lots. This vintage originally scored 90 points. The most recent review was by James Suckling of Wine Spectator in 2007 awarding 88 points: “A tannic vintage, particularly for the Médoc; this is drinking surprisingly well. Shows aromas of ripe berries and mushroom, with hints of tobacco. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, rich finish.” Suckling indicates that it should be drunk in the next few years. This is another wonderful example of why Bordeaux has such a stellar reputation for the quality and longevity of their wines.

Robert Parker rated this jewel 96 points: “One might call the opaque purple-colored 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate ‘locked and loaded.’ Fashioned from a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc (which saw about 25% new oak), it exhibits a tremendously pure, but tightly-knit bouquet of creme de cassis, leather, forest floor, minerals, and licorice. Dense, with layer upon layer of concentrated black fruits intermixed with spice and wood, it displays full body, great purity, low acidity, and a solid lashing of heavy duty tannin in the blockbuster finish. It’s great stuff!” The good news is that Parker estimated plateau from 2009 – 2025, so it is ready to go. Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is always one of our very favorite wines, and this one is special! It is huge; it is gorgeous; and it handles heavy duty meat! Do not miss out on this one!

James Laube [WS] rated the 2005 Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon with 92 points stating: “Savory herb and ripe currant, berry and plum aromas are firm and intense. Full-bodied and well-structured, with the tannins gaining traction on the finish. Rustic but balanced.” This wine will be at its peak through the middle of the decade. This is great straight-forward Napa Valley Cabernet at its best.

“Medium-bodied dry sparkling red wine; medium amber cherry color, like a dark rosé. Aromas of crushed fresh raspberries; flavors of fresh red fruits with a touch of spice and a lively bramble-kissed finish. Balanced, elegant, seamless. Crisp, clean, not at all sweet. Classic Champagne method. All Pinot Noir.” – Jane Garvey, Wine Guide. “the Schug turned out to be one of the richer sparklers tasted, and the most suggestive of Champagne … The flavor was a sonnet to fruit, smoke and leather.” – Mike Dunne, Sacramento Bee. Nice bubble with a couple of bonus items in addition.

Parker-rated 94: “The 2005 Bin 707 was aged for 16 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Already complex aromatically, scents of cedar, sage, clove, mineral, black currant, and blackberry waft from the glass. Smooth, layered, and bordering on opulent, this will be a long-lived Cabernet which should drink well for 25 years.” Penfolds makes some of the best Cabernet in the world. Parker rated the last 3 vintages either 94 or 95 points. Wonderful Cabernet from downunder in Australia.

Diamond Creek was California's first exclusively Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Vineyard. It was established in 1968 by Al Brounstein, a visionary who defied modern conventions and planted Bordeaux varietals on secluded Diamond Mountain in the Napa Valley, thus creating one of the first California cult wines. Sadly, he died in 2006. The Volcanic Hill microclimate has consistently produced the most acclaimed wines of the estate. James Laube, WS, rated the 2006 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill a solid 93 points: “Deep, rich and concentrated, with loamy earth, currant, dried berry, leather, peppery tobacco and sage flavors that are bold and, at points, fleshy in texture. Impressive for its depth, focus and complexity, with plenty of backbone for the cellar.” We have never tasted a Diamond Creek wine we didn’t love!

Robert Parker 94 points: “Caymus has one of the most enviable track records of any California winery. Having followed their Cabernet Sauvignons since the early seventies, I find it remarkable that this winery has never gone through a slump. Not many wineries, anywhere in the world, can match the Wagner family's consistent record of success. The Caymus Special Selection is one of the most renowned luxury cuvees of Cabernet Sauvignon in California. The 1992 displays an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by huge, full-throttle aromatics offering a blast of sweet, toasty new oak combined with exceptional red and black fruits. Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, with not a hard edge to be found, this is low acid, fat, delicious Cabernet.” Parker simply doesn’t praise a winery any better than this. In 1975 Francis Coppola discovered the historic Inglenook property while searching for a “quaint” summer home. Impressed by the vast property and history of Inglenook founded in 1880 by Gustave Niebaum, Coppola purchased the property and founded the Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery. Today, Coppola has acquired all of the original Inglenook vineyards and restored winemaking to the Chateau. In honor of this accomplishment, he changed the name of the winery to Rubicon Estate. Using only estate grown fruit, Cask Cabernet spends 24 months in American oak. James Laube notes: “Supple and graceful, with excellent balance, offering layers of plum, black cherry, blackberry and savory herbal scents. Gains complexity and nuance on the finish, where the flavors push on.” A storied winery, a storied owner, and you can bet, a storied wine.

The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker’s publication, gave 94 points to this millennium vintage. “The 2000 Dom Perignon is a gorgeous, seductive wine that floats on the palate with remarkable grace. Toasty aromas meld into freshly cut flowers, apricots and pears, with sweet notes of mint and licorice that linger on the long finish. This perfumed, inviting Dom Perignon is elegance personified, and in this vintage the wine fully merits its lofty reputation.” It is acute irony that the monk for which the cuvée is named spent most of his career trying to figure out how to keep the bubbles out of the still wine from the Champagne district. Happily, he failed miserably and the rest is elegant history! James Bond would drink it, why not you?

Parker normally rates Dunn Vineyard Cabernets in the 90s. Unfortunately, neither he nor James Laube rated this vintage. The Howell Mountain wines consist of one hundred percent Howell Mountain fruit. The Napa Valley wines include up to 15% Napa Valley floor fruit with the remainder of the fruit coming from Howell Mountain. The Howell Mountain is denser and richer with blacker fruits as well as more body. Both are full-bodied, powerful Cabernets very much in keeping with Dunn’s style. These are great classic Napa Valley Cabernets waiting for you.

His influence is as pervasive as Robert Parker’s. His mantra includes harvesting riper grapes and using more new oak in the aging process. Château Fontenil is included in this great list. Wine Spectator rated this vintage 90, Parker 89. James Suckling [WS]: “Very ripe and rich on the nose, with blackberry, meat and chocolate aromas. Medium-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and tannins. Velvety texture.” A very nice bottle of right bank Bordeaux that is at its peak now.

Parker rated the 2001 Château Doisy-Vedrines 89 points: “Medium gold-colored, this is a fruit bomb-styled Sauternes revealing aromas of smoky oak overlaying orange marmalade characteristics. Uncomplicated, sweet, rich, and concentrated.” And, “A tightly-knit but unctuous effort, Raymond-Lafon’s 2001 exhibits aromas of espresso roast intermixed with honeyed peaches, apricots, lychee nuts, and a hint of coconut. Unfortunately, Mr. Parker could only see his way clear to impose a 99 rating on this Mollydooker: “Amazingly, the 2005 Carnival of Love ratchets up the level of quality. A selection of the finest Shiraz barrels, it boasts an extraordinary black/purple color, gorgeous notes of blackberry liqueur, camphor, and smoke, and an enormous voluptuousness that would make even Pamela Anderson jealous. Great purity, symmetry, and harmony as well as remarkable balance for such a rich, intense wine, as it sat in the glass espresso, vanillin, white chocolate, and additional black fruits also emerged. It should drink well for a decade, although the winemakers suggest it be consumed over the next four years.” Now really, if its voluptuousness would turn Pamela Anderson green with jealousy [Parker’s words, not ours], you KNOW you have to taste it – don’t you!

A lovely, expressive syrah...” “Cherry and blackberry aromas, with pepper and spice undercurrents hinting of chocolate, coffee and toast announce this inaugural Syrah. Aromas of currant liqueur, chocolate, spicecake and loam. Slightly sweet and a bit youthfully aggressive, with liqueur-like strawberry and raspberry fruit flavors nicely shaped by acidity.” RP 91: “Another terrific effort, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2001 Zinfandel York Creek boasts aromas of black fruits, minerals, animal, and earth. This primordial-styled Zin is full-bodied, burly, muscular, and loaded.” Pagani Ranch & Dusi Ranch – NR [both vintages]. Powerful, rich, and concentrated, with a finish that lasts for nearly a minute, it is a legendary Châteauneuf du Pape in the making.” According to Mr. Parker, at that time it was the best vintage of Cuvée Laurence he had ever tasted. The wine received ratings in the upper 80’s from both Robert Parker and Wine Spectator. Parker states: “… garnet/ruby color … is followed by a Medoc-like bouquet of cedar, plums, cherries, and spice box with hints of sweet oak as well as roasted peanuts. History of this property dates back to the 16th Century. The Cazes family acquired the Lynch-Bages estate in 1934; and, today Jean-Michel Cazes is the owner. When we were privileged to have dinner with Jean-Michel several years ago, this was one of the wines he discussed at length. Robert Parker, 92 points: “The 1985 has been totally disarming, seductive, and sexy since birth. Its corpulence, medium to full-bodied personality, low acidity, attractive silkiness, and copious quantities of herb-tinged cassis fruit have always made this wine a winner. It is a beautiful, elegant style of Lynch-Bages. It is sure to please both connoisseurs and neophytes.” In 2007, James Suckling of Wine Spectator re-rated this wine 95 points: “The 1985 was the magazine's Wine of the Year in 1988. Robert Parker’s respect and admiration for the Wagner family and their wines are noted throughout this catalog. The 2008 Conundrum is not rated, but a typical comment is: ““This delicious blend of five white wine grapes is one of the best of its type from California. It’s a complex wine, with an array of ripe, concentrated flavors—pear, honey, fig, vanilla, peach and nectarine, finishing with lots of character and a dash of spice. Delicious.” – Wine Spectator. James Laube [WS] rated the Mer Soleil Silver 91 points: “Combines ripe, intense peach, nectarine and tangerine fruit, with touches of floral and spice. Gains body and depth, turning creamy in texture.” Laube-rated 92: “The 2007 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe and fleshy, with rich plum, wild berry, spice and savory herb notes that are complex, full-bodied and expansive on the palate, ending with firm tannins and a dash of espresso.” Laube gave the Belle Glos wines 88 and 89 points respectively. Of the 2007 Belle Glos Taylor Lane: “Fresh, ripe, vibrant black cherry, wild berry and raspberry fruit is pure, clean, crisp and elegant. Full-bodied, this ends with touches of anise and sage.” Six wonderful bottles of exceptional Wagner Family wines!

The illustrious Sauternes estate, Château Rieussec, is located in the commune of Fargues very close to appellation leader Château Yquem. Rieussec was ranked at the premier cru level in the 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac. Both Parker and James Suckling [WS] rated the 2005 with 96 points: “Enticing aromas of toffee, cream, dried apricot and caramel. Full-bodied, very sweet and thick, with honey and caramel flavors.” Great Sauternes in a large format bottle!

Spottswoode is a historic family-owned winery renowned for producing classic, refined wines. The 2006 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon is the winery’s 25th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon. What a glorious history! Robert Parker has rarely rated any vintage below 90 points. Of the 95 rated 2006 vintage, he states: “The 2006 is largely all Cabernet Sauvignon with just a small amount of Cabernet Franc in the blend. This wine, which I believe will evolve for 25 or more years, has a gorgeous nose of violets, black currants, licorice, camphor, and a hint of graphite. Layered, rich, and full-bodied, the wine has an opaque purple color as well as wonderful purity and balance. It could be considered the wine world’s version of haute couture at a top address in Paris. It’s a beauty, perfectly balanced and as flawless and seamless as a 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa can be.” You can’t buy that praise from Parker … unless of course, you simply buy the wine – and, it’s a magnum!

Pahlmeyer is a great entrepreneurial success story. We commend it to you. However, the wine … well that is even more compelling! This three bottle vertical received Parker ratings of 90, 94 and 94 respectively. BTW, James Laube gave the 2004 a 92. RP states: “Pahlmeyer has consistently produced one of the finest, most ageworthy Merlots in California. Their 2004 Merlot exhibits a soft, fleshy, up-front, charming bouquet of chocolate, berry fruit, and roasted herbs. Round, front-end loaded, and seductive” – and that’s for the least rated bottle! “The 2005 Merlot is looking sensational, and far better than I thought last year. Blended with 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine reveals distinctive black cherry and berry notes intermixed with chocolate, mocha, caramel, and scorched earth. The wine is full-bodied, fleshy, but has underlying acidity and a long, layered finish.” And then, finally: “Pahlmeyer’s offering remains one of the classic examples of just how great Merlot can be in Napa. The 2006 Merlot exhibits sweet chocolate, mocha, cola, black cherry, and plum aromas and flavors as well as full body, a sumptuous, dense texture, and no hard edges. The beautifully integrated acidity, tannin, and wood result in a hedonistic, mouthfilling, luscious Merlot!” Even Miles Raymond [Sideways] would love to drink this fantastic merlot!

The last time that either Robert Parker or James Laube [WS] rated this wine, they awarded 88 points. The most recent review was by Laube in 2005: “Mature, this remains an impressive wine, with complex currant, cigar box, anise and hints of dried flowers peeking through on the finish. Exquisite balance, it's definitely ready and a treat to drink.” You don’t often have a chance to taste good 35 year old Cabernet from a top producer. This wine is ready to drink and waiting for you.

Stymie was a famous racehorse in mid-twentieth century American history. Stymie was known for never giving up the lead when he gained it. He was so infamous for this in fact that the horse callers brought the word into the English vernacular by calling out “They’ve been stymied again!” Winemaker notes: “A Merlot with a rich, deep red color and firm body, exhibiting aromas of chocolate, jammy fruit, tobacco and pepper. The palate reveals a rich, well-structured wine with layers of ripe red currants, anise, chocolate-covered cherries, a peppery mid-palate, and just a hint of coffee. This high-quality fruit produces an excellent, long-lasting finish and smooth tannins.” So now, you will never be “stymied” again, unless you decide to drink this whole bottle by yourself at one sitting.

Faust, the wine, celebrates a legend. In Goethe’s work, the aging scholar Dr. Faust barters his soul in the afterlife in exchange for another chance at youth. He gets his chance, yet ultimately his soul is saved by love. Winemaker notes: “Classic Napa Valley black and red fruit in the nose; also aromas of vanilla and cedar. Dense and rich on the palate with abundant, concentrated fruit and a rich, luxurious finish.”

Qupé Vineyards history is delineated in the lot from Qupé Winery, itself. The first wine is 100% Syrah from the Alisos Vineyard. Winemaker notes: “Aromas of pepper, rosemary and earth lead to similar flavors. The tannins are significant and the wine should be put down for a few years before consuming. If you keep a cellar, this wine will easily go for a decade beyond.” Both Parker and Laube tend to rate the Alisos Vineyard Syrahs in the high 80s or low 90s. The two Los Olivos Cuvées are blends of Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache. The 2007 is 40%/37%/23% and the 2006 is 40%/40%/20%. Parker states: “Earthy, peppery, garrigue, cherry, plum, and spice characteristics emerge from this stylish Cotes du Rhone look-alike.” Not a surprising comment since Bob Lindquist was one of the original Rhone Rangers in California. The Los Olivos normally receives ratings in the upper 80s from Parker. Good Syrah from a class producer.

Parker rated this wine 90 points: “The wine exhibits a saturated dark ruby/purple color, followed by a pure nose of cassis, minerals, and subtle new oak. Rich and expansive in the mouth, with power and concentration nicely allied to finesse and elegance, this wine possesses a soft texture, as well as enough tannin and acidity for delineation. Charming and intense, this is a beautifully-rendered Cabernet Sauvignon.” Cakebread has always made great red wines, and this is not exception.

Qupé Wine Cellars is located in Santa Maria, California. Bob [Robert] Lindquist, an acquaintance for many years, is one of the original Rhone Rangers from California. He makes extremely interesting wines in all price ranges. His whites are incredible; but, his reds are his reputation. Qupé Syrah, Bien Nacido Hillside Estate is his top-of-the-line. Parker normally rates this wine in the 90s, but did not rate this vintage. Bob says: “This is one of my favorite syrahs – an amazing combination of power, complexity, and balance. This wine is built for the long haul. The great thing, though, is how juicy and enjoyable they are already but this should age beautifully for 15-20 years.” We have drunk Qupé wines for years. We never drank a bottle we didn’t want more of! We collect the Bien Nacido Hillside Estate and highly commend it to you. Better yet, it’s a 5L of this great wine – and we will gladly help you drink it!

James Suckling of Wine Spectator gave this wine a solid 91 rating. His tasting notes indicate the wine "Has great elegance and harmony, and should continue to improve for many years. Medium ruby-red, with very fresh plum aromas, medium-bodied, with very delicate fresh fruit flavors, lively acidity and a delicate finish." Almost 36 years later, you know this is ready to drink and will be one great experience!

Rockpile Zinfandel is one of the most sought after California Zinfandels. There are 148 acres of vineyards planted in the mountain sides of the Rockpile Ridge area high above Lake Sonoma. The vines are stressed to the max and as a result not much juice comes from these grapes. The wines made from the Rockpile vines are big, bold, and full of fruit flavors. The Rockpile AVA is located in a remote region at the end of the Dry Creek Valley AVA in Sonoma County. James Laube rated all of these wines in the high 80s or low 90s. Of the 92-rated 2007 Seghesio Rockpile: “Focused like a razor, with bright raspberry, cinnamon and licorice aromas and complex, zesty cherry, toasty sage and peppered beef flavors that linger toward ripe but firm tannins.” Of the 89-rated Mauritson Rockpile Ridge Vineyard: “Ripe and big-boned, with blackberry cobbler and spice aromas and jammy, rustic wild berry, dried sage and cracked pepper flavors.” We never had a wine from the Rockpile AVA we didn’t love. It is California Zinfandel in top form.

Just down the road from fabled Château Yquem, is the large, beautiful estate of Suduiraut. Suduiraut is one of the great wines of Sauternes which have been renewed for their aromatic complexity and their wealth of exotic flavours. The 1970 vintage assemblage of Sémillon (90 %) and Sauvignon (10 %) offers a full-bodied wine of a beautiful gold colour with amber tinges. This Sauternes discloses harmony, power end complexity. Monsieur Raymond-Lafon established his estate in the mid-19th century. Robert Parker has stated: “This small estate continues to turn out remarkably rich, unctuously-textured, thick, powerful wines that brilliantly balance power and intensity with elegance and finesse.” Rating the 1989 Château Raymond-Lafon 91 points, he describes: “The wine possesses an opulent, full-bodied, exotic, lavishly rich personality, moderate sweetness, and huge quantity of extract in its finish.” Two wonderful sauternes still good and ready to drink plus 300 grams of foies gras! Mais oui, but of course it is the classic pairing!

Haut-Brion, a domaine notable for the grandeur of its wines and its illustrious history, is a benchmark estate for the Pessac-Léognan appellation and the only Graves estate to be ranked in the 1855 classification. History of the estate dates to the 14th Century and vines have been cultivated here for at least six centuries. Rated 94 by both Parker and Wine Spectator originally, the last review was in 1997 by Harvey Steinman [WS]: “Balanced and harmonious, finishing with surprising length. Sweet caramel and berry overtones ring on the finish.” He rated it 92 points at that time. In spite of its age, this bottle of Haut- Brion should still be delicious but it will be at the end of peak plateau within the next few years. So, drink up!

The early history of Chateau Pichon-Lalande naturally matches that of its twin sibling,Pichon-Baron, the two having both been created from the great Pichon estate, which dates back 1646. The estate was split after the French Revolution and the death of Joseph Pichon. The portion inherited by the brothers was named Baron; the portion inherited by the daughters was named Comtessa de Lalande. Robert Parker rated these vintages 94, 95, and 92 in chronological order. “One of the best wines of the vintage. Dense ruby/purple in color with a glorious nose of melted licorice, lavender, barbecue smoke, black currants, and graphite, the wine is tannic, classically structured with an opaque ruby/purple color, and beautiful definition. This deep, full-bodied, elegant yet powerful 2002 should age handsomely for over two decades. The brilliant, opulent, fleshy 2003 is dense plum/purple-colored and offers gorgeous aromas of blackberries, plum liqueur, sweet cherries, smoke, and melted licorice. Fleshy, full-bodied, and intense, displaying a seamless integration of wood, acidity, tannin, and alcohol, this beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 20 years or more.” This is a classic vertical of a wonderfully classic left bank Bordeaux.

Pride Mountain makes some of the absolute best Merlots in the New World. Period. The Pride Mountain Merlot, Napa – Sonoma Counties received 93 points from James Laube [WS]: “Aromas of cedar, ripe berry fruit and hints of toasty oak offer solid clues as to what comes across on the palate. Intense and well-balanced, the supple blackberry and black cherry flavors pick up a nice dose of creamy mocha and toasty oak on the finish.” The movie Sideways almost single handedly destroyed the reputation of Merlot in this country. Yet, some of the most expensive wine in the world on an annual basis comes from Pomerol, where the wine is 100% Merlot. For example, if one looks back over the last 30 years of Petrus [100% Merlot], only 5 are valued at less than $1,000 per bottle. In fact, the en premieur price for 2008 Petrus is in excess of $2,500 per bottle. We are not saying that Pride Merlot is the equivalent of Petrus; but in our opinion, the price/value relationship for Pride Merlot far exceeds that of most Pomerol wines. Said another way: “Try it, you’ll like it!” [with apologies to Bristol-Meyers]

The word “buccella” is Latin for “mouthful.” The name “envokes our wine’s big, bold, concentrated layers that wrap your mouth with luxury.” What a promise! And, it is delivered! Robert Parker, 95 points: "The 2006 Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon, a candidate for Cabernet of the vintage, reveals a gorgeous perfume of chocolate, black raspberries, flowers, ink, and graphite, followed by a full-bodied, textured, superbly concentrated wine with terrific purity as well as density. Cabernet Sauvignon has always been king at Caymus [see Lot with 1992 Caymus Special Selection]. Parker-rated 93+ and Laube-rated 95: “Lots of aromatic complexity, with ripe plum, blackberry, mineral, slate and cedary oak flavors that are rich and concentrated, with ripe, polished tannins and a long, full-bodied finish that echoes mocha and berry flavors. Keeps revealing vivid and thick flavor nuances. Another amazing Caymus Special Selection” – JL [WS]. Robert Parker rated the 2000 Bellefont - Belcier, Saint-Émilion, Grand Cru Classé 90 points: “This dense ruby/purple-colored offering offers sweet, jammy black cherry fruit accompanied by notes of dried herbs, cedar, licorice, and spice box. Medium to full-bodied, with a sweet attack as well as excellent concentration and symmetry.” Parker rated the 2000 Chateau Fombrauge, Saint-Émilion, Grand Cru 90 points: “Opaque purple-colored, with gorgeous ripeness and richness, a big, sweet mid-palate, and a seamless finish revealing loads of fruit, chocolate, glycerin, and ripe tannin. It is hard not to be totally seduced by this effort.” Finally, a word about the 1996 Richebourg, Propriètaires à Vosne Romanée. Based on the French AOC laws, we know this wine is from the Richebourg AOC and that the wine was produced from grapes grown by multiple proprietors from the city of Vosne-Romanée. Parker rated 8 different Richebourgs in 1996 with an average score around 95. The lowest was 92. The vintage is ready to drink now. In less than two decades, Burt and Ed created a cult-status winery of international acclaim. Today John and Kathe Dyson, who purchased the winery from Burt and Ed in 1998, carry on the passion for Pinot Noir winemaking. According to winemaker Bob Cabral’s notes: “The nose is redolent of ripe cherries, wild berry jam, violets, spice, crème brûlée and honey-cured bacon. Your mouth fills with flavors of Bing cherries, raspberries, root beer, fennel, spice and toasted vanilla beans. The properly matured and concentrated tannins are rich and fleshy across the palate. His empire is in the Russian River, and it continues to expand, with a bevy of artisinal hand-made Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Cabernet Sauvignons, and more recently, Syrahs. Paul Hobbs’ 2007 Chardonnays are crisp, full-bodied, intensely flavorful wines with higher than usual levels of vibrancy and freshness because of the acid profiles and cool growing season. The generic 2007 Pinot Noir Russian River is an outstanding example of Hobbs’ meticulous vineyard sourcing and winemaking. With copious sweet forest floor, plum, black cherry, and earthy notes, a luscious, medium to full-bodied texture, and a long finish, The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa offers plenty of blackberry and black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, smoke, and earthy undertones.” He rated these wines 90, 91-93, and 90. The estate surrounding what we know today as Château Lafite-Rothschild was in existence for many centuries before the arrival of viticulture. Lafite, (lafite meaning 'hillock'), was an ancient seigneurie dating from at least the 14th Century. The second wine of the Château is Carruades de Lafite, though it is a major wine itself. RP 90 points: “It shows wonderfully sweet lead pencil shavings mixed with an elegant black cherry and cassis nose. A wine of tremendous purity, medium body, and the tell-tale Lafite elegance, this is a gorgeous wine.” Poyferré and its peers Barton and Las-Cases have their origins in the grand Léoville estate that dominated St Julien in the 17th and 18th Centuries. Classified as deuxième cru [second growth] in 1855, Léoville Poyferré is the owner of what could be characterized as the most beautiful soil in Saint-Julien. Mr. Parker awarded the 2000 Château Léoville Poyferré, Saint Julien 95 points: “Wow, this wine has really come on strong. A brilliant effort, it boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeously sweet nose (make that explosive nose) of blackberries and creme de cassis intermixed with minerals, smoke, and earth. Yes, the same Pahlmeyer. This three bottle vertical received Parker ratings of 91, 96 and 95 respectively. BTW, James Laube gave them 93, 94, 90. Pretty high praise from the pundits. RP states: “A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, the outstanding 2004 Proprietary Red Wine possesses a deep ruby/purple color in addition to notes of vanilla, espresso roast, black currants, plums, and licorice. This wine should be cruising along brilliantly in 2030+.” And then: “2006 Proprietary Red Wine (a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec) ... Most of the fruit comes from the Stagecoach Vineyard and the Waters Ranch. Sweet, smoky, meaty aromas interwoven with melted asphalt, camphor, blackberry, cassis, and charcoal scents emerge from the complex aromatics. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, displaying sweet tannin, a concentrated mouthfeel, and a long, heady finish with substantial fruit, glycerin, and extract. James Laube [WS] rated the 2000 Pride Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 90 points: “Intense and vibrant, with a tight band of spicy currant, anise, mineral and sage. Young and backward, it needs time to soften and evolve. Best from 2004 through 2012.” The Cabernet is planted on some of Pride’s most extreme rocky volcanic soils at 2000+ foot elevation which results in darkened wine color and contributes to the concentrated cassis and chocolate flavors. We think that the finish on Pride’s full-bodied Cabernets continues to coat the palate with soft, chewy and flavorful tannins long after the glass is empty. In 1998 James Suckling, writing for Wine Spectator, rated this vintage 93 points stating: “Medium ruby. Beautiful aromas of flowers and fresh plum, with hints of stems. Full-bodied and medium-sweet, with gorgeous silky tannins and a long, long finish. This is just starting to come around and offers wonderful flavors. Long life ahead, but ready to try.” Robert Parker, while not rating the vintage stated: “This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best.” If you like vintage Port, and who doesn’t, these bottles are for you.

Originally rated 99 in a 1993 review, it has since garnered 2 ratings of 98 – one in 1999 and one in 2001. The most recent review was by James Suckling in 2005 for a 1989/1990 horizontal review. He stated: “This [1989 Château Mouton Rothschild] is outstanding quality, with pretty aromas and flavors of mint, berry and milk chocolate. The history of the Clos de Vougeot, and thus of Vougeot the commune, runs back to the days of the Abbaye de Cluny. Clos de Vougeot plays a vital role in Burgundy as a designated Grand Cru vineyard. Bruce Sanderson rated this vintage for Wine Spectator awarding 90 points: “Massive and backward. It's difficult to get a sense of this monolith, yet it's packed full of spicy cherry and earth character. Only the sweet oak and fruit notes on the long finish indicate its potential.” That was written in 1997. The 1995 vintage in the Côte de Nuits was outstanding. Switchback Ridge Wines are sourced exclusively from the Peterson Family Vineyard in Calistoga, which has been in the Peterson family since. In 1990, the orchards were replanted to vineyard, where there are currently 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines, in addition to a three acre 50+ year old Petite Sirah block that John Peterson helped plant as a child. The winemaker is Robert Foley whose background is documented a lot donated by Robert Foley Vineyards. Switchback Ridge wines are almost always rated in the mid-90s. Although 2006 was a challenging vintage in Napa, Wine Spectator rated the Cabernet Sauvignon 93 and the Merlot 92. Laube did not rate the 2006 Petite Sirah, but the average for the previous 6 vintages was 92 – none below 90. Some WS notes on these wines: “Sleekly structured yet builds in intensity. Offers aromas of currant and mocha and rich, layered flavors of black cherry, exotic spice and toasty oak. [Merlot].” “Wonderful purity of Cabernet fruit, intense and concentrated, with a medley of black currant, clackberry, dark plum, spice and black licorice. Firm and focused, with chewy tannins. The core flavors are deep and persistent, ending with a touch of heat.” Parker comments: “Switchback Ridge has made a bevy of amazing Petite Sirahs that possess off the charts richness as well as a full-bodied style offering notes of espresso, ground pepper, blackberries, camphor, and incense.” All Switchback Ridge wines are highly allocated and sell out from the winery, particularly the Petite Sirah. It was in the early 18th century that viticulture became a part of life on the Mouton estate. Initially not ranked as a “Premier Cru” in the 1855 Classification, primarily for political reasons, it was only thanks to the tireless campaigning of Philippe Rothschild that Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture, passed a decree conferring the status of first growth upon Mouton Rothschild in 1973. At last the wrong had been righted, and from then on Mouton's labels bore a new inscription, Premier je suis, second je fus. Mouton ne change, or First I am, second I was. Mouton does not change. The 1970 Château Mouton Rothschild has a Marc Chagall Label. Parker rated 93: “The wine opened magnificently to reveal a classic bouquet of sweet cassis, tobacco, minerals, and exotic spice aromas. Opulent, full-bodied, thick, and juicy, the extraordinary evolution of this particular bottle would make a persuasive argument for long-term decanting.” This vintage is almost 40 years old and still drinking strong. It will continue a peak plateau for probably another decade. How many wines do you drink that can say that?

At Château Latour, the extensive vineyards were not fully established until about 1670, although the history of the estate itself dates back to at least the 14th century. The estate was duly classified as a first growth in the HYPERLINK "http://www.thewinedoctor.com/regionalguides/bordeauxclassifications.shtml"1855 classification. In 2000 Robert Parker rated this vintage 94 points: “Drinkable young, it has continued to evolve, offering extraordinary aromatic complexity as well as surprisingly deep, concentrated flavors atypical for the vintage. A dark opaque garnet color with amber at the edge is followed by a spectacular bouquet of dried herbs, cedar, smoky black fruit, and coffee. Rich, but structured, with moderate tannin, this medium-bodied, elegant yet complex wine possesses a sweet mid-palate in addition to a long, concentrated finish with abundant tannin. This underrated 1971 has been fully mature for over a decade, but it reveals no signs of cracking up or becoming attenuated. Anticipated maturity: now-2012.” It’s 39 and holding … but time’s a-wasting.

Domaine du Pégaü is one of the top Châteauneuf du Pape producers as measured by its quality and consistency over the years. Rated 95 points by Robert Parker: “The 2007 Pegaü Cuvée Réservée is the most promising wine made here since the 2003. It is a full-bodied effort revealing dense, concentrated fruit, and high tannins that will require some bottle age to round into drinking shape. The color is a dense plum/purple, and the wine shows considerable licorice, lavender, roasted herb, and meat juice characteristics, as well as a texture of beef blood – no doubt attributable to the old vines from which it is made. The fruit dominates, and the wine is intense, rich, and full-bodied. Drink from 2012 for the next 20-25 years!” With this double magnum, a little patience will bring a vast, rich reward!

Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 845 acre estate on the eastern slopes and lower half of Spring Mountain. It extends from 400 feet above sea level to about 1450 feet at the top of the property. The 2000 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is comprised 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Merlot. Winemaker notes: “a wine with bright fruit, spice, and a hint of mint, with an undertone of earthiness. These flavors combine with quality oak, smooth tannins, and a balanced structure to become a full-bodied wine.” This is an interesting left bank-style Bordeaux blended wine with great promise.

Already known in the 12th Century, what is now Château Margaux did not have any vines. History of viticulture on the site dates back to around 1572. Of course, Château Margaux was one of six wines designated in 1855 at the Second Great Exhibition in Paris to be a “First Great Classified Growth” wine; and, it was the only one of the six to get a unanimous vote for the classification. Mr. Parker provides 96 points: “The 1986 Margaux continues to be the most powerful, tannic, and muscular Margaux made in decades. The black/ruby/purple color reveals no sign of age. The reluctant nose offers up aromas of smoky, toasty new oak and black currants, as well as a few flowers. The wine is mammoth, with extraordinary extract, superb balance, and a frightfully tannic finish. This is a Margaux of immense stature, made in a masculine, full-bodied style. It should prove nearly immortal in terms of aging potential.” How immortal? It’s ready to drink now, but its plateau will run to the middle of this century! However, only if you can wait that long to drink it!

Gevrey-Chambertin’s first mention in the annals of history dates to the 7th century when its vineyards were offered as a gift to the monks of the Abbey de Bèze. It appears continually since then, and was considered the favorite wine of Emperor Napolean Bonaparte. All vineyards touching the city namesake, Le Chambertin, were named Grand Crus. One vineyard, Clos Saint-Jacques, did not touch Le Chambertin but was the equal in quality of many of the Grand Crus. It became a Premier Cru. Some of its nearest neighbors followed the Grand Crus by associating themselves with this the fabulous Clos Saint-Jacques. Hence, we have Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a very fine vineyard in its own right. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is an HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appellation_d%27origine_contr%C3%B4l%C3%A9e" \o "Appellation d'origine contrôlée"Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Cru" \o "Grand Cru"Grand Cru HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vineyard" \o "Vineyard"vineyard located within the commune of HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gevrey-Chambertin" \o "Gevrey-Chambertin"Gevrey-Chambertin. The AOC was created in 1937. Because all three of these bottles are village wines which bear the name of no single producer, ratings are not available, per se. However, Parker rated most 1991 Clos Saint-Jacques wines 91 points and most 1991 Chambertin Clos de Bèze wines in the low 90s. Based on geographic association, the Lavaux Saint-Jacques should be the same. Great Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyard Burgundy that is ready to drink.

The 1998 Paul Autard Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée la Côte Ronde, RP 95: “A dense ruby/purple-colored wine with sweet black currant and cherry notes infused with smoke, pain grille, caramel, and garrigue. Full-bodied and luscious, with moderate tannin. It is a sumptuous, sexy Châteauneuf du Pape.” A double magnum of highly regarded Châteauneuf du Pape – bring on the grilled and roasted meats.

Parker-rated 94 points: “Composed of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new French oak for 22 - 24 months, it is a sensational effort. The opaque plum/purple color is followed by a superb nose of smoked herbs, melted licorice, and black currant jam. Full-bodied, with a silky texture, and an opulent personality, this sexy, full-throttle Cabernet Sauvignon will be delicious young, yet last for 18-20 years.” A marvelous Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet at plateau until the end of this decade and looking for your party! – And, it comes in a double magnum!

Of the 87 rated 1999 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Parker said: “It boasts a dense ruby/purple color, and a concentrated, opulent personality with flashy notes of black currant, kirsch, spice box, cedar, and smoke. Full-bodied, low in acidity, and juicy, this lush, in-your-face Cabernet Sauvignon.” James Laube rated the wine with 91 points: “Dill, lavender and mocha scents are followed by a trace of coconut and layers of spicy currant, herb, sage and plum flavors. Very rich and concentrated. Impeccably balanced, with a long, persistent aftertaste that keeps echoing fruit and oak.” Either way, here are two great large format bottles of highly sought-after Silver Oak Napa waiting for you to snatch them up.

Bordeaux immigrant Jean Laurent came to California in 1852 to seek gold, but instead founded one of the first wineries in Napa Valley. After Laurent’s death in 1890, the winery continued operating under a succession of owners. Bruce Markham arrived in Napa Valley almost 100 years later. He purchased vineyards in Yountville, Oak Knoll and Calistoga and the old Laurent winery, which was operating as a cooperative at the time. In 1978, he founded Markham Vineyards and the old Laurent winery was reborn. Winemaker notes: “Blackberry jam and cedar aromas are highlighted by intriguing notes of fresh tarragon. The concentrated texture of this Cabernet draws you in; soft yet gloriously chewy. Berry fruit flavors are accented by rich caramel and finish with a subtle mineral "sense of place." We have known Brian Del Bondio and Markham Vineyards for at least a decade. The wines are always clean, fresh and good quality. This Methuselah deserves a place at your next party.

Revana Family Vineyard property lies just north of St. Helena, prime Cabernet Sauvignon country. Planted in 1998, the Revana Family vineyard is comprised of eight separate blocks totaling nine acres. There are five blocks planted with Cabernet Sauvignon clones, one block of Cabernet Franc and two blocks of Petit Verdot. Each clone was specifically chosen to provide layers of complexity in the finished wine. Jim Barbour, who makes good cabernet under his own label, is the vineyard manager. BTW, did we mention that Heidi Barrett was the winemaker? She is currently winemaker for Jones Family, Barbour Vineyards, Paradigm Winery, Showket Vineyards, Lamborn Family, Lynch, and Revana Family Vineyards. Past clients include Screaming Eagle, Grace Family, Vineyard 29, Hartwell/Grace, and Oakford Vineyards. She says: "The 2006 Revana Cabernet is deep ruby in color with aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry and cassis. Hints of sweet French oak lead you into the first sip confirming this is a special wine. The wine is full, yet soft in the mouth, dense and structured with mouth coating velvety tannins. Flavors on the palate match the aromas of ripe black fruits layered with toasty, elegant oak components. The flavors persist with good balance and tremendous length." Neither Parker nor Laube have rated this vintage, but you know … I would take her word for it any day!

In keeping with the vintage, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot) has a dark garnet color and a complex nose of boysenberry, truffles, wild game, soy, and black pepper. On the palate, the wine has a silky mouthfeel and an elegant, long finish with a slight tannic grip.” – Winery Notes. Newly released, Stephen Tanzer has rated it 91 points: "Good deep red-ruby. Musky aromas of cassis, licorice, game, tobacco leaf and subtle brown spices. Velvety-sweet and deep, with hints of tobacco leaf, mint and herbs giving definition to the middle palate. Nicely bright but youthfully tight wine, finishing with broad tannins.” What more can we say about Silver Oak? This wonderful double magnum will provide enjoyment anytime for the next two decades.

The 1995 Château Mouton Rothschild received a 95 from Parker [94 from WS]. Parker states: “In the mouth, the wine is 'great stuff,' with superb density, a full-bodied personality, rich mid-palate, and a layered, profound finish that lasts for 40+ seconds.” James Suckling [WS] gave it 96 points: “Aromas of ripe fruit and grilled meat follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long caressing finish. Very beautiful wine. Mouton shows finesse yet richness in this vintage.” Find out why Château Mouton Rothschild is the only wine to be added to the “First Growth” 1855 Classification after its establishment!

This Premier Grand Cru Classé property occupies a unique position in St Emilion and Bordeaux. With its mysterious name, Cabernet Franc dominated vineyards, and a history of turning out simply fabulous wines, it’s no wonder that Cheval-Blanc is, to many, an irresistible lure. It was in 1832 that the first part of what was to become Cheval-Blanc was acquired from the Figeac estate. It is now owned by LVMH, the luxury goods group that peddles handbags, perfume and Champagne, and managed by Pierre Lurton, who divides his time between Cheval-Blanc and his other chief property, Château Yquem. James Suckling [WS] wrote a review in 2007 awarding 91 points to this vintage: “Medium ruby, with a garnet edge. Aromas of plum and fresh herbs, such as basil, that turn to cedar and cigar box. Full-bodied, with soft, silky tannins. Long and flavorful, with subtle chocolate, berry and light coffee aftertaste. Gorgeous.” This is another stupendous first growth drinking a peak four and a half decades after the vintage!

The terroir for this wine is Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. It doesn’t get much better than that! The wine typically spends 24 or more months in French oak barrels, 60% or so of them new. Robert Parker: “The outstanding 2006 … (79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc) is a medium-bodied, elegant Cabernet-based wine with a dense purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of loamy soil, crushed rock, black currant, plum, licorice, and a hint of subtle, well-integrated new oak. Approachable now, it promises to evolve for 12-15+ years.” James Laube [WS] rated the 2005 a 92: “Offers wonderful harmony, finesse and balance, with rich, ripe, supple tiers of spice, currant, black cherry and plummy Cabernet fruit that's pure, focused and long on the finish.” We are sure the other three bottles are equally great, knowing the Cakebread provenance! Cakebread single vineyard wines are always top notch.

Kosta Browne’s history is detailed elsewhere in these notes. These four bottles’ ratings from Jim Laube [WS] are: 95, 92, 95, 94! WOW! The 2007 Sonoma Coast was the #4 Wine of the year in 2009 for Wine Spectator. “Firm and focused, with a wonderful purity of flavor, offering a complex, focused mix of black cherry, raspberry, spice and anise. Full-bodied and concentrated. Long and persistent on the finish.” Of the 2007 Kanzler Vineyard, Laube writes: “Wins extra points for its balance and delicacy, with complex mineral, fresh earth, boysenberry, wild berry and raspberry fruit that gains depth and richness without gaining weight.” You get the idea! Michael Browne and Sam Lando are friends of ours. We tasted some of these in Sebastopol in November. You can take our word for it, these wines are truly amazing!

On this vintage Parker and Suckling [WS] basically agree with ratings of 91 and 92. Parker says: “An attractive, smoky, tarry, roasted black fruit character dominates this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine's aromatic profile. Low acidity, sweet, rich fruit, and a forward, expansive feel suggest this full-bodied wine will mature quickly, but it will last for at least two decades.” Suckling says: “A big and juicy, young vintage Port. Round, with loads of very ripe roasted and raisiny character. Full-bodied and medium-sweet, with a tannic backbone.” We don’t think you can go wrong either way!

These three wines are all from Hermitage, one of two truly great red wine AOCs of the Northern Rhône. Red Hermitage is generally 100% Syrah. Hermitage may also be white, made from Marsanne and Rousanne, and ages well for years. RP 91: “The 1998 La Sizeranne [rouge] offers up an earthy, smoky, sweet black currant-scented nose, followed by big, chewy, full-bodied flavors, excellent texture, and deep, sweet, ripe flavors.” HOWEVER, the stars of this lot are the two Ermitage Cuvée de L'Orée vintages! Rated 99, “Nearly perfect, one of the most prodigious dry white wines I have ever tasted is the 2003. It tastes like a liqueur of licorice intermixed with a liqueur of honeysuckle, quince, and rocks. Opulent, viscous, and full-bodied, it boasts extraordinary freshness and liveliness as well as monster concentration and a finish that lasts over 60 seconds. It may be a 100-year wine? Without question, it is a tour de force in winemaking.” And of the 1997, rated 98-100, Parker states: “Made from 90-year old vines and microscopic yields, this wine flirts with perfection. Made from 100% Marsanne, it is as rich and multidimensional as the fullest, most massive Montrachet money can buy. It is unctuously textured, yet extraordinarily and beautifully balanced. It should last for 4-5 decades. It is a huge, chewy, multidimensional wine with spectacular concentration and richness. Notes of white flowers, honey, minerals, and peaches are present in astronomical quantities.” We have tasted the La Sizeranne and the 1997 Cuvée de L'Orée – the whites are unlike any other wine we have tasted, and the red is awesome.

The Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is produced at their Oakville estate, whose location midway between the Silverado Trail and the town of Oakville provided the inspiration for the Silver Oak name. This vertical carries Parker ratings ranging from 87 – 92. However, the Silver Oak Napa Valley has long been a benchmark for other wineries. Of the 92 rated 2001, he states: “It offers a big, smoky, herb, black currant, tobacco, spice box, and barbecue spice-scented bouquet, and broad, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, sweet, jammy flavors with plenty of sexy, toasty American oak in the background. It is a hedonistic fleshpot of a wine.” Of the lowest rated 1999: “It boasts a dense ruby/purple color, and a concentrated, opulent personality with flashy notes of black currant, kirsch, spice box, cedar, and smoke. Full-bodied, low in acidity, and juicy, this lush, in-your-face Cabernet Sauvignon.” They sound a lot alike to us. Remember, finding a six bottle vertical of Silver Oak Napa Valley is very uncommon. We never started a bottle of Silver Oak we didn’t enthusiastically finish.

Helen Turley began working with Martinelli in 1993; she introduced new viticulture and cellar practices to the Martinelli family and is now the consulting winemaker and Bryan Kvamme is the winemaker. RP 95: “The 2005 Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard has sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with roasted herbs, pepper, spice box, and gamey aged beef notes all combine for a wine with great fruit, huge glycerin and volume, as one might suspect from the alcohol level, but no sense of heat. This is a ripe, heady, individualistic/singular style of wine that you either love or hate. I simply love it.” "Dominated by allspice, clove, and herbaceous black cherry notes is the 2005 Pinot Noir Moonshine Ranch. This is a relatively bigger, more masculine style of Pinot Noir, with forest floor notes and loads of body and tannin." –RP 89+. “A new cuvee, the 2005 Pinot Noir Lolita Ranch has light ruby color with a nose of sweet cherry/kirsch liqueur with hints of licorice and forest floor. This is a lush, fleshy, seductive wine that is appropriately named. This medium to full-bodied, heady, voluptuous style of Pinot” RP 92. This is a magnificent Super Tuscan! Parker rated the 2006 vintage 94 points: “The estate’s 2006 Solaia is a big, powerful offering loaded with ripe blackberry jam, herbs, minerals and French oak. Like all of the 2006s from Antinori, the Solaia remains extraordinarily dense and primary. Readers will have to be patient with this wine and give it plenty of bottle age before the full range of its aromas and nuances blossom fully. Solaia is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.” As good as it is now, it will get much better! 3 terrific bottles of Super Tuscan for a loving patient home!

The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker’s publication, gave 93 points to this vintage. “Smoke, toastiness, tar and ripe fruit emerge from the glass in a generous, expansive style. The wine possesses outstanding balance and plenty of harmony.” Bruce Sanderson, writing for Wine Spectator, stated: “There's a high-toned minty graphite accent to the aroma, with a citric edge on the palate. The structure is overlaid with lemon and bread dough notes. This is tight and crisp on the finish, so break out the sole or shellfish, or wait a few years.” It’s hard to top that recommendation!

Today, Kosta Browne is one of the premier Pinot Noir producers in California. Their wines are mostly only available by purchasing them directly from the winery. James Laube [WS] rated these wines 91 and 90 respectively. The Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is a blend of nine vineyards which lie in and around the central part of the Russian River Valley appellation. “Smoky, savory dried berry, sage, cola and hints of anise and herb fold together in this sleek, trim, focused youngster. Medium- to full-bodied and well-proportioned, ending with a mix of fruit and cedary oak.” The Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a blend of three vineyards. “Offers a pretty burst of ripe plum and black cherry fruit to accompany the herb, sage, dusty berry and loamy earth flavors. Ends with a complex aftertaste and hints of anise and toasty oak.” We tasted these wines in Sebastapol in November and they were mighty tasty! Better yet, these are magnums!

Both Parker and James Laube [WS] rated the Larkmead 90 points. RP: “The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up aromas of blueberries, cassis, licorice, and smoky wood. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent purity, an opulent mid-palate, and a long, persistent, moderately tannic finish.” Parker-rated 87: “The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (a blend of 86.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.7% Merlot, and 4.7% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as tightly knit aromatics consisting of sweet black fruits intermixed with mineral and earth characteristics. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins.” Both Parker and Laube [WS] rated the Cakebread 88 points. RP: “This attractive, open-knit Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, a forward, pleasant bouquet of cedar wood, black currants, cherries, and earth, supple tannin, and a savory, medium-bodied, well-balanced personality. Its up-front charm and forward fruit suggest consumption over the next 7-10 years is warranted.” Three good Cabernets that are ready to drink now.

The 1995 Château Margaux received a hearty 95 rating from Robert Parker, but James Suckling of Wine Spectator liked it even better – giving it a perfect score of 100 points. “A full-bodied, chewy blockbuster of a wine that is not giving anything at all away. Robert Parker has called Sidury Winery: “One of California’s top Pinot Noir producers. One of my favorite wines.” Matt Kramer, Wine Spectator columnist in his new book New California Wines: “To taste Siduri is to tastes some of the best Pinot Noir made in America today.” Siduri is named for the Babylonian Goddess of wine, who, in Babylonian mythology, held the wine of eternal life. Adam and Dianna Lee started Siduri 15 years ago. They now produce a plethora of Pinot Noirs from a wide variety of vineyards in Sonoma, Central Coast, and Santa Barbara counties in California, as well as Oregon. All are small production lots of superb Pinot Noir. They are also beginning to branch out into other varietals under the Novy label [named after Dianna’s maiden name]. James Laube [WS] awarded 91 points to the 2007 Siduri Pinot Noir Sonatera Vineyard: “Enticing loamy earth, dried currant and black cherry fruit is supple and elegant, medium- to full-bodied. Complex and layered, ending with caressing tannins and a long finish. Drink now through 2014.” We have know Adam and Siduri wines for many years, but it was his lovely wife, Dianna, who donated this lot to L’Amour du Vin at a tasting of their wines in Atlanta. During this period he also created the highy acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, School House, and Engel Family wines. In 1998 Robert Foley Vineyards bottled their first Claret, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. James Laube [WS] anointed the 2006 Claret with 94 points: “Smooth, rich and complex, this is full-bodied, with firm, focused currant, sage and dusty berry fruit that runs deep with concentration, unfolding to reveal blackberry, mineral and light cedary oak flavors.” Laube gave the 2006 Merlot 91 points: “Offers ripe cherry and toasty sage aromas, with concentrated and complex flavors of dried plum and herb that finish with dusty, mineral-tinged tannins.” Think about it – 15 years at Pride, winemaker at other top notch wineries – this wine is top notch from one of the top winemakers in Napa! JS: “Blueberry and ripe raspberry aromas, with hints of fresh flowers, follow through to a full body, with extra-refined yet powerful tannins and a long, long finish. Polished and well-crafted. Best after 2014.” Mr. Parker: “The 2005 Sperss is simply gorgeous in its layers of super-ripe black fruit, smoke, licorice, French oak, new leather and spices. As is the case with most wines in this vintage, the 2005 Sperss is relatively compact and two-dimensional yet it offers outstanding balance in an easygoing style for this wine.” Angelo Gaja makes the finest Italian wines available. Verticals of Silver Oak don’t show up in auctions very often. When they do, it is usually just two to three bottles. But we are fortunate enough to offer a six bottle vertical! For many people, the name Silver Oak tells them everything they need to know. But, just in case you are interested, here is some more on this wonderful vertical. Parker rates these wines as 92, 89, 87, 89, 88, and 90 respectively. As a general statement about Silver Oak wines, he states: “Silver Oak wines are supple, explosively fruity, and deliver copious quantities of glycerin, extract, and richness wrapped in generous quantities of American oak … these wines have a broad window of drinkability, being delicious at release and able to sustain their fruit and character for 15 or more years.” All are definitely ready to drink and will bring a lot of pleasure down to the very last drop.

Ripe and fleshy, with dark fruit, black licorice, mineral and fresh earth flavors. Full-bodied, this gains complexity and depth on the finish.” Although the 2007 Chardonnay Sonoma Valley is unrated, we know that it has “enticing aromas of citrus and white flowers are the initial notes, but with time the wine unfolds to offer marzipan, pear, and toasted almond. A rich vanilla-honey scent gives an impression of sweetness to the overall aromatic profile. In the mouth, the inherent richness builds over time of lemon, chamomile and clean mineral emanating from a tautly wound core structure.” We had the honor of participating in this luncheon in November and tasting these wines. You get a total endorsement of the experience and the wines from us. Don’t miss this opportunity – it is an unbelievable experience!

The Château Latour received 96 points from Parker [94 WS]. Parker says it has “a 40 second finish and calls it “medium to full-bodied, with exceptional purity, superb concentration, this is a magnificent example of Latour.” James Suckling [WS] added: “Black licorice, cedar, cigar box and fresh herbs. Full-bodied and very structured, with firm, silky tannins and a long finish. Best after 2009.” Suckling’s comment in a 2007 review. Château Latour never disappoints. This is a stunning bottle of wine!

The Piedmont may be regarded by some as the most significant Italian wine region, for it is the origin of perhaps the greatest Italian red wine, Barolo. This is a frequently age-worthy wine made from the Nebbiolo grape, many of which wines produced deserve at least ten years of cellaring. Parker’s ratings for this group are: 95, 90, 92, NR, 91-93, 90-92, NR. Of the two unrated wines, surrounding years for the Costamagna were rated 89, and for the Mentin Ginestra 90-94. A representative note from RP: “The 1997 is a flashy, opulent Paolo Scavino Bric Del Fiasc, with layers of super-ripe dark fruit, chocolate, tar and alcohol that burst onto the palate in a display of awesome concentration and length. It is a big, weighty Barolo that promises to drink well for at least another decade.” All of the notes are similar. Seven bottles of the best that Italy has to offer from a legendary vintage – all at peak plateau now. What a great collection of the Piedmont’s finest!

Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93+ points: “The 2003 Oakville Estate Proprietary Red is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, and equal parts Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec. This opaque purple-colored 2003 offers sweet aromas of scorched earth, tobacco leaf, blackberries, and currants. Layered, beautifully-textured, broad, elegant, and refreshing, this is a well-structured, superb effort.” In addition, four people will be honored guests of Rudd for a private tour and tasting. Great wine, great hosts, great tour and tasting! Napa Valley Hospitality at its elegant finest.

Here is what Robert Parker has to say about Jonata: “This remarkable Santa Ynez estate is under the same ownership as Napa Valley’s Screaming Eagle winery. While well-known Bordeaux consultant, Michel Rolland, and Screaming Eagle’s winemaker, Andy Erickson, play important roles at Jonata, the people most responsible for the quality of the wines are owners Charles Banks, Stan Kroenke, and winemaker Matt Dees. RP rated 94+: “The 2005 El Desafio de Jonata boasts an inky/purple color as well as a moderately intense nose of forest floor, earth, blackberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied and powerful, with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, this cuvee builds incrementally on the palate (it is full-bodied), but displays wonderful freshness, vibrancy, and precision.” RP rated 95: “The 2005 El Alma de Jonata is one of the greatest Cabernet Francs to emerge from California, it boasts gorgeous notes of bay leaf interwoven with blueberries, black currants, licorice, flowers, and subtle smoke. A wine of exquisite precision, outstanding richness, astonishing elegance as well as finesse, this is a brilliant achievement that must be tasted to be believed.” RP rated 94: “The 100% Syrah offering, the 2005 La Sangre de Jonata, exhibits an inky/blue/purple hue along with a stunningly pure nose of melted licorice, meat juices, blackberries, pepper, and a hint of balsamic. It is a wine of extraordinary density, richness, high tannin, beautiful purity, laser-like acidity, and superb texture as well as length.”

Both Silver Oak and Beringer have been detailed elsewhere in the catalog. Parker rated these two Silver Oak wines 91 and 90 respectively. “The 2002 Silver Oak Napa is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot. A big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, licorice, smoke, hickory barbecue spices, and cherries jumps from the glass of this dark plum/ruby/purple-colored wine. Expansive, full-bodied, and voluptuous with opulent texture, this is a juicy, fleshy Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2002 Alexander Valley offers abundant quantities of spice, vanillin, cedar, herbs, and smoke, soft, round, creamy-textured flavors, good black cherry and currant notes, and a spicy, medium-bodied, easy-going personality.” Parker rated the 2004 Beringer Private Reserve with 95 points: “The final blend has turned out fabulously. The wine’s dense purple color is accompanied by a rich, sumptuous bouquet of creme de cassis, lead pencil shavings, chocolate, toast, and spice box. It possesses fabulous fruit, low acidity, a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, pure finish.” This is serious California Cabernet from two top-notch, popular producers.

Far Niente Chardonnay, Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon and Dolce, the ultimate trio of Napa Valley Wines! The winning bid will take home these gorgeous big bottles. On your next trip to the Napa Valley please enjoy tours and tastings at both Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel Wineries. Long a premier name in Napa Valley Chardonnays and Cabernets, Far Niente and sister winery Nickel and Nickel have solid reputations of superior wines on a consistent basis. The Far Niente Estate is a gorgeous facility on the hillside above Oakville that is a destination. Winemaker notes: “The 2008 Far Niente Estate Chardonnay greets with aromas of ripe melon, fig and peach. A creamy and smooth entry leads to a rich midpalate, layered with ripe tropical fruit and toasted hazelnuts. The finish is long and mouthwatering with well-integrated toast and spice.” 96 points and a Cellar Selection, Wine Enthusiast: "The 2005 Nickel & Nickel Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet is a stunningly powerful 100% Cabernet, rich in fruit and well-oaked, that shows the authority of Oakville in a great vintage. Flooded with cassis, black cherries, dark chocolate and cedar, it's nonetheless too young in brisk tannins to fully express itself. A joy to drink, but needs time.” The 2004 Dolce Late Harvest “has a rich texture and flavors, yet it's light on its feet, with honeyed apricot, dried pineapple, peanut brittle and hints of earthy horseradish notes. Wonderful acidity runs throughout. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc.” – James Laube [WS]. Unsurpassed elegance coupled with wonderful wine, the tour and tastings, this lot is phenomenal.

In 1972, Nicholas Feuillatte acquired a 12-hectare vineyard in Bouleuses, Champagne. In 1976, the Nicholas Feuillatte brand was created; and, in 1985, the Palmes d’Ors Vintage Cuvée is created in memory of one of the loves of his youth. Wine Spectator awarded 91 points: “A blast of fresh cherry and violet aromas, this is like a Pinot Noir with bubbles. Clove and cinnamon are added to the mix, all presented in a full-bodied, open-textured manner." A unique bottle and Champagne.

Paoletti Estates Winery is located in the Calistoga district of the Napa Valley and has been making Bordeaux blends and Super Tuscan styled wines since 1994. The 2003 La Forza is a Super Tuscan blend containing 85% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Although this particular vintage was not ranked, the La Forza normally gathers ratings in the high 80’s with comments similar to: “Malt, black cherry, red currant and toasty oak nuances have concentration and firm tannic and acidic structure, with lingering flavors that stay lively through the finish;” and “cranberry, raspberry, spice and a hint of licorice.” This great Super Tuscan is ready-to-drink now.

The Fairchild Estate Vineyard rests on steep, gravelly slopes high above Napa Valley, where it enjoys a superb climate with sunny days cooled by the evening breezes that arise from Lake Hennessey. The vineyard site, sharing proximity to Lake Hennessey with eminent neighbors like Colgin Cellars, Chappellet, Kuleto Estate and Bryant Family Vineyards, produces wines with intensity, nuance and finesse, qualities that truly distinguish the great wines. Jim Barbour is the Vineyard Manager and Paul Hobbs is the consulting winemaker. Both of these wines are made in miniscule quantities, 100 cases of Sigaro Napa Valley and 130 cases of Napa Valley. Winemaker notes: “The Sigaro leans stylistically toward Bordeaux, offering a slightly floral mix of dark cherry, red currant, red plum, chocolate, tobacco leaf, new leather, vanilla, dry red rose and baking spice scents. It is very rich in body, but has polished tannins and beautiful oak integration which, along with some tannic grip, giving it a rather statuesque mouth-feel. The flavors are of dark cherry, plum and sweet red current, tied to lots of vanilla, toast, earth and leather. The finish is very long and elegant. The Napa Valley is a blend of 40% Sigaro Vineyard and 60% Napa Valley floor fruit selected by Paul Hobbs, mostly from the Beckstoffer Vineyard. Super rich and well focused, the nose of this Cabernet offers aromas of dark cherry, berry, dark plum, cinnamon, vanilla, toast and hints of caramel and forest floor spice. Things are just as sweet-natured and luxurious on the palate, where flavors of dark cherry, dried cherry, sweet red plum, mulberry, vanilla, toast, cedar, toffee and earth fan out in an opulent display. The finish is lingering and packed with cherry and currant fruit.” These wines are not available in Tennessee except at this auction. They are every bit as good as Paul Hobbs single vineyard offerings! We promise Fairchild wines will absolutely blow you away!

In December 2006, Parker stated: “As indicated last year, 2004 was a terrific vintage for Turley Zinfandels. If they can still be found, I would opt for purchasing them over their lighter 2005 counterparts.” 2005 Old Vines Zinfandel [90-92]: “Basically a blend of old vine parcels that are not big enough to be sold individually, reveals a dark plum/ruby color, oodles of sweet cherry, plum, licorice, pepper, and spicy characteristics, medium to full body, and a fleshy, generous, well-endowed personality. Yum! 2004 Presenti Zinfandel [90-93]: This wine “could pass for a Grenache-based southern Rhone with its striking minerality, pepper and kirsch liqueur-like notes. Full-bodied.” 2004 Dogtown Zinfnadel rated 87-89. However, the star of this show is the 2004 Hayne Vineyard Petite Syrah rated 96-98+. “The Petite Syrah reveals a black/purple color as well as notes of graphite, smoke, blackberries, blueberries, creme de cassis, a liqueur of mineral-like intensity, and huge tannin and concentration. It possesses the purest fruit, density, and intensity. This is a prodigious wine that should be purchased only by those with cold cellars and good DNA for longevity as it will all age for 40-50 years.” Come on, you have to buy that one, don’t you!

The guest cottage is on the property of Dr. Mary Rocca and Dr. Eric Grigsby (originally from Knoxville), proprietors of Rocca Family Vineyards. Must be on a mutually agreeable date before March 1, 2011. James Laube [WS] awarded 92 points to the 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: “Tightly wound, with a mix of savory herb, dried currant and berry, cedar, tobacco and spice. Full-bodied and balanced, if restrained, this is slow to unwind, but as it does it reveals depth and complexity.” Winemaker notes – The 2006 H. Gray Bad Boy Red reflected: “Very bright dark raspberry and blackberry aromas jump out of the glass. Lightly vanilla-scented oak tones provide a deeper note to the lifted perfumy fruit aromas, showing nice depth and a juicy mid-palate. The finish shows just a tiny “zip” of fresh crisp berry flavor.”

On the famed estate of Castello Banfi, where traditional practices are carefully blended with modern technology, rests the single vineyard named La Pieve, from which this spectacular wine originates. Here, with near perfect conditions of climate, soil and sun, the celebrated Sangiovese grape achieves greatness. Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, Poggio all'Oro is aged for a total of five years, including a minimum of two years in French oak barriques. With a ruby-red color complemented by a rich bouquet, this wine emerges with exceptional depth and character. Soft, yet intense, it demonstrates hints of plum, chocolate and cherries. James Suckling [WS] rated these bottles 93 & 96. “Dark ruby red. Aromas of blackberry, dried flowers and cherry. Very intense and concentrated nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long flavorful finish. Lots of light vanilla and crushed dark fruits on the finish.” Notes for the 1995 are similar. Two wonderful wines from Castello Brunello di Montalcino that are at peak plateau and ready and waiting for you.
