   Hiraki Sawa: Pop-up Books: Making Spaces

Students will draw and construct a pop-up book incorporating a juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated objects within a personal space based on the big idea of Hiraki Sawa’s art while showing comprehension and mastery of the skills demonstrated.

   Darren Waterston: Experimental Watercolor

This art lesson relates to the work of Darren Waterston. Waterstonʼs work at the KMA is oil on wood panel, but many of his paintings are watercolor or appear to have watercolor
like qualities. This lesson allows students to experiment with watercolor as a medium,
trying out a variety of techniques.

Instructional Objectives:

The student will Demonstrate an understanding of various watercolor techniques through the production of 7 individual technique/texture pieces and one combined piece in relation to the style of Darren Waterston.

 


   Crystal Wagner: Tiny World Collages

This art lesson relates to the work of Crystal Wagner. It is an interdisciplinary project that combines science and art in a fun mixed media collage project. This lesson can be tailored to almost any grade level.

Instructional Objectives:

The student will review the concepts of combining science and art as well as the media exploration of collage used by Crystal Wagner in a teacher led discussion and print, draw, and cut shapes and patterns found in nature to combine into one large collage to show understanding of the concepts discussed by the teacher. The students will also discuss their finished product during a critique on the end of the lesson.


   Jered Sprecher: Fragmented Paintings

This art lesson relates to the work of Jered Sprecher. It is part of an abstract painting unit
that also covers the art of Tomory Dodge and Stuart Netsky. The individual lesson plans focus on the Idea of concept throughout a body of work (paintings) executed through different techniques as demonstrated by the specific artists.

The student will review the concepts of creating “fragments in the midst of change, destruction, redefinition, and restoration” used by Jered Sprecher in a teacher led discussion. The student will choose an image and fragment it into basic elements and shapes in a painting to show understanding of the concepts discussed by the teacher. The students will also discuss their finished product during a critique on the end of the lesson.

   Robert Rauschenberg: Handmade Paper

This will be an art lesson that deals with found object and collage by making recycled handmade paper (much like Robert Rauschenberg) and to appreciate our environment.

Following a discussion on Robert Rauschenberg, the students will compose two pieces (maybe more depending on time) of recycled handmade paper that incorporates paper scrapes and found objects.

   Bill Barrett: Movement Sculptures

This art lesson relates to the sculptural art of Bill Barrett. Bill Barrett is a sculptor who works with the figure in an abstract manner. In this lesson the students will be introduced
to sculpture and will sculpt their own gesture of a figure out of wood and then finish it with paint or tissue paper.

Instructional Objectives:

The students will review the work of Bill Barrett as seen in the Knoxville Museum of Artʼs permanent collection. They will combine scrap pieces of wood to form a figural type sculpture and complete with paint. Each student will have one finished sculptural piece inspired by Bill Barrettʼs bronze sculptures.

 


   Robert Longo: Monumental Drawings

This art lesson relates to the work of Robert Longo. Longo renders extraordinary drawings
of icons and popular culture. Because of his use of perspective, viewpoints and angles his subject matter is monumentalized. Allowing
the student to use a subject or theme that relates to their personal philosophy, aesthetic,
and or interests, can transform a dull perspective exercise into meaningful art!

Instructional Objectives:

After looking at a series of drawings rendered by the artist Robert Longo, the High School Art I students will choose a contemporary issue or icon that has personal meaning to them. Paying attention to perspective, viewpoint, and shading, the students will complete a drawing of their chosen subject matter.

 


   Stuart Netsky: Identity Paintings

This art lesson relates to the work of Stuart Netsky. It is part of an abstract painting unit
that also covers the art of Tomory Dodge and Jered Sprecher. The individual lesson plans focus on the Idea of concept throughout a body of work (paintings) executed through different techniques as demonstrated by the specific artists. This is the last lesson of the unit. The two previous lessons relate to visual culture and environment whereas this one ends with focusing inward.

The student will review the concepts of focus inward and studying beauty, idealism, and nihilism used by Stuart Netsky in a teacher led discussion. The student will choose only colors, shapes, and patterns painting to perfect their identities. The
students will also discuss their finished product during a critique on the end of the lesson.

 


   Lee Walton: Codes in Drawings

This art lesson relates to the work of Lee Walton. It is a project based on observations,
coding, translations, symbols, language, and drawing. The students will come up with a
coded language, observe, and draw. This is a lesson that can easily relate to many other
disciplines.
